At the Slack Farm, Tom places emphasis on stylish
ewes that milk well, lamb easily and are sound on
their feet and legs. Multiple births, length of
hindsaddle, and prime legs are also critical to
building Tom’s complete sheep. While others may
scramble to add thicker sheep for the current market
trends, Slacks have always made muscle a priority.
Many of the ewes are highly line-bred with
bloodlines based on a ram that Tom raised; known as
Total Blast. Tom feels that this ram was one of the
best rams ever in the Suffolk Breed. Consistency is
the key to Slack’s success.
In 1979 Tom initiated the first Formula for
Champions Sale held in Warsaw, Indiana. Fifty
breeding ewes and thirty-three market lambs were
sold and two of them went on to become Grand
Champion and Reserve Grand Champion at the North
American International Livestock Expo in Louisville,
KY and Champion on the rail. The sale grew and is
now entering its 35th year; the Formula for
Champions Sale is the longest running club lamb sale
in Indiana. Six breeds are sold in the FFC sale:
Suffolk, Black-face Cross, Hamp, Dorset, Natural
Color and White-face Cross. We have put nine lambs
from three breeds in the Grand/Reserve drive at the
Indiana State Fair Coliseum in the past five years.
In our Countdown collage, we appreciate the showmen
who have earned success at the state level.
Congratulations Jesse O’Hara, Grant Friesen, Ashley
Ferrell, Wesley Carroll, Amber Ferrell, and Brett
Slack. We want to thank them for selecting Slack
Sheep for their projects and commend them for a job
well done. We’re proud of you!
Tom’s sheep business spans the nation. Twenty times
Slack Suffolks have been the first or second largest
registry of Suffolks in the National Suffolk Sheep
Association/United Suffolk Sheep Association since
1991. Last year Tom sold sheep to 288 customers in
29 states. He sells over 100 rams annually and many
customers returned to purchase a second, third, or
fourth ram because they trusted the genetics. In
addition, the Slack consignment at the Mid-West Stud
Ram Sale has excited buyers for the past seven
years. Some of the awards won by the Slack flock at
the Mid-West sale include Reserve Supreme Champion
Wether Sire Ram, Champion Dorset Wether Sire,
Champion Dorset Wether Dam, Res. Champion Dorset
Wether Sire, Res. Champion Suffolk Wether Dam, Res.
Natural Color Wether Sire, eighteen first place
